Things To Know About Living In Midwestern Canada

Canada is a massive country, and because of this, many large swaths of it are overlooked.  Although this may be the most interesting area that Canada has to offer, it’s often overlooked! These are the top things you need to know about midwestern Canada and why it’s an awesome place to live.

In Canada, This Area is Known as the Prairies

Although this portion of the USA would be called the midwest, it’s considered the prairies in Canada.  Named after the large expanses of flat land that are fantastic for farming and agricultural industries, this area doesn’t have a lot of water or rivers, but it has a lot of beautiful land.

Some portions of it will surprise you, like how the Rocky Mountains reach up into Alberta and form Jasper and Banff’s mountain parks, but generally, this area is flat and easy to traverse.

There’s A Large Call for Tradition and Knowing the Past

Most of this area works hard to keep its past alive.  Not only through cities like Calgary that hold its Stampede once a year but also through the indigenous people who have lived here for thousands of years.  For generations, the people who live here and have lived here understand the importance of looking into the past and taking lessons from it.

Of course, there’s still an enormous appeal to working in industries like technology and actively keep working towards a better future. Still, no other part of Canada takes understanding its past this seriously.

Houses Are Far More Affordable Here

Calgary homes for sale are often half the price that homes in Toronto or Vancouver may be listed at, even when they’re similar in size.  This means that families can afford more land, more rooms, and more space to spread out.

People who live here enjoy having a work-life balance, and getting to have more land ensures that they can spend time outside with family or be active in ways that aren’t possible in many portions of the country.

You Can Still Enjoy City Living!

Just because you settle down in The Prairies doesn’t mean you have to give up cities!  There are multiple major cities in this area, like Calgary and Edmonton.

This ensures that you can live in a heavily populated metropolitan area, enjoy the industries that are available for work, and still live in a more open and affordable space.  This is fantastic for people who want a little bit of both or wouldn’t be able to afford city-life outside of The Prairies.

Home to the Highest Paying Province

Alberta is Canada’s highest-paying province!  In 2019 this was the first state to move its minimum wage up to $15 an hour, and it continues to raise its wages for all workers.  This means you can enjoy a job that pays you a more than fair salary while also getting to pay far less for housing and get more space.

Combined, it has become the best place in the country for affordable living and is extremely popular for people who are new to Canada.
