The idea that coffee is dehydrating came about because it had a mild diuretic effect. However, coffee is brewed with water – the most hydrating substance on the planet. Not surprisingly, the study noted above discovered that coffee is just about as hydrating as water. Another point worth noting is that the body can build a tolerance to the diuretic effect of coffee making it that much more hydrating.

Researchers believe it’s a compound in coffee called quinides that helps prevent strokes.

Ironically, a beverage that can give you the jitters can also protect against the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. A few years ago neuroscientist at McGill University discovered that 2-4 cups of coffee a day provided modest symptom improvement in Parkinson’s patients. In particular, movement speed and stiffness were improved.

Just as important, research has also shown people who drink coffee are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease in the first place. Since little is still known about why the disease occurs you might as well drink up even if no one in your family has ever had Parkinson’s.

Coffee Drinking Leads to a Decreased Risk of Diabetes 

Type 2 diabetes is running rampant in the U.S., but coffee could help solve the problem. The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) got study participants to increase their daily coffee intake by more than one cup over four years decreased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 11%. On the flip side, people who decreased daily coffee consumption by a cup increased their risk by 17%.  It’s just one of several studies that clearly prove coffee makes type 2 diabetes less likely.

Coffee Provides a Mental Pick-Me-Up

It’s no secret that coffee gets your brain buzzing. But what you may not know is that coffee can reduce depression. Over 4% of people in the U.S. suffer from depression mental disorders. If you want to reduce the risk of becoming depressed Harvard researchers recommend drinking four cups of coffee a day. Studies have shown four cups of java reduce depression risk by 20% and makes people 53% less likely to commit suicide.

Coffee Can Help You Avoid Cancer

The World Health Organization once thought coffee was carcinogenic, but in 2016 they completely reversed their opinion and now say it’s protective against cancer. It’s becoming common knowledge that coffee is a great source of antioxidants, which has a lot to do with its ability to fight cancer.

Coffee has been linked to lower liver cancer risk in numerous studies. One study in the International Journal of Cancer notes that coffee drinkers are 40% less likely to develop liver cancer. Coffee has also been shown to protect against colorectal and uterus cancers as well.
