Journey Into The World Of Sake & Celebrate Its Diverse Flavours At The Inaugural Sake Meguri Singapore

Sake, the traditional Japanese beverage, is gaining popularity among younger audiences, and the spotlight is now on this rising trend. To cater to the growing appreciation of sake, ‘Sake Meguri 2023’ will be launched for the first time in Singapore on 22 July. This inaugural event, to be held at Peridot 201-203 @ MAX Atria, Singapore Expo, will offer sake enthusiasts a unique opportunity to taste over 200 premium sake labels and delve into the history of each sake. Representatives from 18 renowned sake breweries across Japan will also be present to share their stories, culture, and the fascinating history behind their sake label.

Sake Meguri 2023 aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Japanese sake breweries while providing an experiential journey for attendees. Organized by Sake.sg, a pioneer in importing a diverse range of sake from breweries all over Japan since 1999, the event will feature an impressive selection of high-end and rare sakes. Attendees will have the chance to sample exclusive labels such as Born Chogin, TANAKA1789xCHARTIER Blend 001, Masumi Junmai Daiginjo Nakadori Nanago, Nanbubijin All Koji, Hakkaisan Junmai Daiginjo 8 years Snow Aged, and more. Early-bird tickets for the event are priced at $58 per ticket (U.P. $65), $199 (U.P. $220) for a group of 4, and $399 (U.P. $520) for 10 persons. Each ticket includes a goodie bag worth more than $40 and a complimentary Riedal glass. Additionally, attendees will have access to exclusive ‘Star Buy’ sake promotions of up to 50% off.

Sake, with its more than 2,500 years of history, is made from fermented rice. The brewing process involves converting rice starch into sugar and utilises four main ingredients: rice, water, yeast, and Koji, the spores of the fungus ‘Aspergillus Oryzae.’ Each stage of the brewing process, from rice polishing to yeast fermentation, is meticulously managed to create the distinctive characteristics of sake. Traditionally enjoyed with Japanese sashimi or during Izakaya, sake’s mellow and smooth taste also pairs well with the spices and flavours of various cuisines in Singapore, including Chinese and Peranakan.

In addition to the wide selection of sakes, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses conducted by Sake sommeliers, including Joshua Kalinan, Master Sake Sommelier of the Year 2018. Priced at $60 per ticket, these masterclasses will provide insights into the world of sakes through tasting sessions and discussions on tasting notes, flavour profiles, and the brewing process of unique sake types. The masterclass titled “Is Sake Ideal to Pair with Our Local Hawker Fare?” will explore the pairing of different types of sake with local cuisine, while “Does Terroir Exist in Our Sake” will delve into the factors influencing sake production.

Eric Ong, Director at sake.sg, believes that Sake Meguri 2023 will introduce more Singaporeans to the expanding world of sake. He expressed his excitement, stating, “Over the years, we have expanded our selection of sake varieties from various prefectures of Japan, aiming to provide Singaporean consumers with exciting new experiences. By offering a diverse range of bottle designs and tastes, as well as showcasing the unique aromas and profiles of each type, we hope to introduce our customers to the art of brewing sake using different types of water, rice, and yeasts. Through this journey, we believe that learning about the intricacies of sake brewing will make the experience all the more enjoyable and engaging.”
