Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m) lies in the borders of Nepal and Sikkim. It is the second highest mountain in Nepal and third highest mountain in the world. Kanchenjunga means ‘Five Treasures of Snow’ in Tibetan language, which refers to its five peaks – South Peak (7246m), Middle Peak (7488m), Great North Peak (7555m), Great East Peak & Great West Peak.’

Kanchenjunga was first recognized as a peak by British explorer Sir Joseph Hooker in 1849. After reaching Darjeeling he wrote “it was then that I saw for myself what an extraordinary spectacle had been witnessed by me from Purneah last year; but it required my seeing it again under these new circumstances to make me realize its true grandeur”
