5 Healthy Alternatives To Coffee

For many people, coffee is the perfect morning drink. However, the high percentage of caffeine in coffee can cause adverse effects such as nervousness, headaches and insomnia. Other people simply do not enjoy the bitter taste of this beverage.  Here are some perfect coffee alternatives for you to try tomorrow morning.

Organic Mushroom Blend

This perfect coffee alternative has only one-seventh of the caffeine of coffee. It combines a blend of organic and natural ingredients including mushrooms, cacao, spices, black tea powder and Himalayan pink salt. It is rich in cultures that are great for your health and provide an energy boost without the jittery side effects of coffee.

To prepare your organic mushroom blend, add a tablespoon of organic mushroom blend to hot water and stir until it is combined. Add a spoon of honey or your favourite nut milk and enjoy. 

Chai Tea

Chai tea has a rich history and has long been an alternative to coffee. The word “chai” comes from the Hindi word for “tea.” Chai tea is a variety of black tea blended with spices. It contains less caffeine than coffee, but it is suggested to stimulate alertness. It is also rich in antioxidants and has been claimed to reduce the risk of heart disease.

To prepare your Chai Tea from scratch, add crushed cardamom, cloves and peppercorns to a pan. Add two cups of water, fresh ginger and cinnamon and bring to the boil. As soon as the mixture begins to boil, take it off the heat and add two tablespoons of black tea. Allow the mixture to steep for at least ten minutes. Strain your black tea and enjoy.

Chicory Root Coffee

Chicory root can be roasted and ground in the same way as coffee beans to produce a beverage that offers a refreshing alternative to coffee. While it’s taste is quite similar, unlike coffee, Chicory Root is caffeine-free. It is also rich in inulin, a fibre which has been suggested to help digestion and the growth of gut bacteria.  

To prepare your Chicory Root coffee, add four tablespoons of Chicory Root grounds for every three hundred and sixty millilitres (360ml) of water. Chicory Root can be prepared in the same way as regular coffee, whether through a filter, in a French press or coffee machine.

Matcha Tea

Matcha tea is a variety of green tea. Matcha leaves are steamed, dried and ground into a powder. It is a rich source of antioxidants and has been suggested to help with weight loss.

To Prepare Your Matcha Tea, use a fine sieve to sift one to two teaspoons of matcha tea powder into a small bowl. Add almost boiling water. Stir the matcha powder into the water slowly until the powder dissolves. A traditional bamboo matcha tea whisk is recommended for this. As soon as a light froth is visible, your matcha tea is ready.Matcha tea can be enjoyed with or without steamed milk.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented mix of black tea, yeast and sugar. It is rich in probiotics and antioxidants and is suggested to have many health benefits. It is not advisable to make your own Kombucha, however many health stores will offer a range of varieties.
