Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake: Berseh Food Centre UFO-shaped Delight

Other than indulging ourselves with delicious cakes delivered to our recent staycation at The Vagabond Club Singapore, we also wanted to use the opportunity to check out some of the must-try restaurants and must-eat hawker food within its proximity. A quick search through web revealed Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake – a stall selling popular oyster cakes on the 2nd floor of Berseh Food Centre which was just a convenient 5 minutes walk away from the hotel! We headed over once we checked in to have lunch and get our hands on some of these famous oyster cakes!

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake – Famed UFO-shaped Deep-Fried Delight

I would never walk past a stall selling oyster cakes anywhere in Singapore. These UFO-shaped deep-fried delights are so hard to find these days. Other than another famous stall located at Maxwell Market, Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake is one of the very few stalls that still sells oyster cakes now. When I finally located the stall, I was horrified to know that the wait was at least 1 hours and 30 minutes. Determined to get my hands on these oyster cakes, I reluctantly agreed and made payment first for a much later collection.

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake – The Trick To Get Your Cakes Without The Wait

I soon learnt you should always call in advance to pre-order your oyster cakes. You will be notified of a timeslot to come down for collection. Just follow it and you can just pick up your goodies and go without the long wait!

But don’t test the system by pre-ordering too close to the closing hour. When I reached to collect at 3pm, they are already stopping their orders for the day. The stall auntie was a little grumpy and wanted to end the day earlier. I don’t blame her, imagining standing there and working non-stop on these oyster cakes. No amount of money can ever make up for the strain on the body!

The oyster cakes were very reasonably priced. Each “normal” oyster cake cost S$2.30 and consisted of an oyster, a prawn, an ample ball of minced pork and Chinese celery. The “upsize” version cost S$2.80 each and came with double the ingredients. Take your pick!

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake – Collecting The Goodies

A separate trip was made after lunch to collect our pre-ordered snack which the uncle packed from freshly made oyster cakes. Due to the high volume of orders, you can be assured that your oyster cakes are all piping hot, fresh from the hot wok and packed only when you reach.

We will be having them for a localised afternoon tea in the comfort of our hotel room!

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake – What’s In The Cake?

If you are new to this traditional Fuzhou snack, the oyster cake consists of oysters, prawns, flour, peanuts and some chinese parsley. We love the thin, crispy crust which was nicely seasoned in a delicious childhood flavour which we still could not wrap our heads around till today. The cake was generously filled in the inside and we stumbled across our prawn and a few fresh, plump oysters within the first few bites. The ikan bilis and peanuts offered additional crunch and aroma to the cake. This is one snack that you must have it when it is hot.
