Be Social Stay Safe On Social Media Day 2013 #smday

It’s Mashable‘s 4th annual Social Media Day! They launched the event in 30th June 2010 as a way of celebrating the digital revolution that’s happening right before our eyes. In the midst of celebrations, British Council Singapore together with CEOP (Child Exploitation & Online Protection Centre) has created an infographic on how to be social yet stay safe on social channels.

Why should I care?

You may not work in social media and you might not even have a Facebook account, but the chances are that your children either already are on social media or that they will be at some time in the future. In fact, according to the Ofcom 2012 report on media use and attitudes 98% of children between the ages of 8 and 15 who have an active social network account are on Facebook even though the minimum age is 13. There are fantastic things that social media can help us do, but unfortunately there are also serious risks and actions that you can take to avoid these risks.

What can I do?

Read and master the five Golden Rules stated in the infographic to help your children be social and stay safe on social media.

To help further with this meaningful campaign for children’s safety, please feel free to download this, print it and share it as much as you want.

Have a happy and safe Social Media Day 2013!
