American Dining on the Float!

Do you know that the old A&W River Boat stationed at Sentosa coastline decades ago has been re-furnished and given a new lease of life as Stewords Riverboat? The vessel which now houses a Restaurant, Al-fresco Bridge Deck Cafe & Function Halls for rental is currently moored at Marina South Pier.

As we approached, I was awed by both the beauty and intricacy of the water wheel system that used to propel this historical river boat for its originally intended purpose.

Thrilled to be dining at its ‘Santa Fe Tex Mex Grill’ for an all American western experience.

The restaurant interior is furnished like a classic American Diner with its own bar. The environment feels really cozy. I was initially a little seasick due to the boat rocking but got used to it eventually. This is afterall a rather small boat and the night waves are rough….

There were only a few tables occupied on a weekday evening. The only staff around was a young chap who delivered attentive service.

Started my meal with a sinful root beer float!

We ordered a Mix Grill Combo for 2 ($38.90) which allows us to experience 3 of the most popular items on their menu – Santa Fe BBQ Ribs, Tex-Mex Grilled Chicken & Blackened Salmon Veracruz served together with Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Vegetables.

The Blackened Salmon Veracruz is a pretty sight that tasted wonderful as well. It comprises of salmon fillets coated topside with crusted black pepper and panfried. I loved the crispy crust with its intensive peppery flavour. The salmon meat is firm and offers textured, juicy bites.

True to its description on the menu, tender meat slip off the bones of our Santa Fe BBQ Baby Back Ribs. These ribs are deliciously marinated with herbs, spices and prepared in a well guarded 4 steps recipe.

Cheese lovers will best appreciate their Tex-Med Grilled Chicken. Melted cheese held the bacon, tomatoes and BBQ sauce in place perfectly on the grilled chicken breast. The grilled chicken breast may be a little dry if not for the melted cheese. But it’s overall a winning combination.

We over-ordered yet again with an additional side dish – Chicken Quesadillas ($7.50 for 4 pieces) served with pico de galo and sour cream. The flour tortillas were slightly crispy. These quesadillas gave a flavourful kick when consumed with their accompanying sauces.

After dinner, we went onto the deck to the sea breeze.

The stairs got us a little curious and we sneaked up to explore the vessel’s upper decks.

The 2nd floor is a well-equipped function hall that is ideal for private and corporate functions like birthday parties, weddings, school events and company dinner & dance etc.

Sneaked a peek when the function room was closed, it should look a lot better when full event decorations are up.

The top deck houses an Al-fresco Cafe. I did not dare to venture up late at night when the area is closed and pitch dark. The occasional moan from the aged vessel as it rubs against the pier can make one’s imagination run wild.

It’s getting harder to find a peaceful spot for dinner in Singapore. This restaurant is a gem if you are looking for quiet dining for 2 or catching up with friends. It serves great food at very reasonable prices. Here’s the full details of the place:
